Barangay History

Long time ago in the Northern part that is 7 kilometers away from Oton there’s a place mostly visited by the people…..It was for its vast farmland and rich in natural resources. “PANGAYAW”as what they called they come here to work like “Mananom, Manggarab, Manghugot Monggo, Matanum Sandiya and others. Since they can earn better they decided to stay in the place.

This place also is quite known as ‘DALANGPAN OF OTHER PEOPLE”who ran away from their barrio that’s why mostly the people here were not really a native to this place….Despite they came from a different places.This people were helpful,respectful and nice to other. They live peacefully and every year they have an abundant harvest may it “root crops, rice, mongo, and vegetables.

Its “DUNA” on this place for being industrious that aside from farming they raised different kinds of animals such as “chicken, goat, carabao. If they got tired of eating meat they go for fishing, since there’s plenty of fish coming from irrigation and in the farm. Since then, the place become known….

The well off of this place had put them in danger. One day the intruders or they called it “BUYONG”came and force to get animals, rice, even young beautiful girls in the place. The native fight and defend their resources but they lose. Despite of everything, many were injured. The native were not afraid rather, they become closer and agreed to make a plan. When the intruders came again they were surprised for the attack. They go home for nothing but rather “UMBILAY THEIR INTESTINE”.

That happened several times…they go home but “UMBILAY THERE INTESTINES”….Since then…this intruders were afraid to come back again.

The place become known as the UMBILAY.Every time people meet in the drinking session there topic was about the “UMBILAY”.”UMBILAY” was the talk of the people, until they agreed to name it “UMBILAY”.

The place become peaceful again and lot of “pangayaw” came here especially in the month of February coz its harvest time and mostly residents earns a better income compared to the other month. With the “scenario” the resident agreed to have a yearly fiesta for  thanks giving and they choose “NESTRA SEÑORA de la CANDELARIA” as thei patron saint.

Umbilay is quite a big place that the “TENYENTE DEL BARIO” having a difficulty of supervising it…so with the help of the wise men, they agreed to separate it from Norte and Sur.
